Falling asleep at work is a common and an embarrassing experience. Especially when it happens during meetings. Some individuals fall asleep even after having a good 8 hours of sleep at night.

Causes of falling asleep at work

  • Heavy meals

After having a heavy and lunch meal, you may feel sleepy at work. This can cause a drop in mental performance especially after lunch hours between 2 pm and 4 pm.

  • You may not be sleeping at the right time

On an average, an adult should sleep at least for 6-7 hours during the night. Any disturbance to this sleep pattern can hamper the normal rhythm of your daily routine. Late night parties, using mobile phones or laptops till very late in the night can all affect your sleep pattern and in turn make you feel sleepy at work during the day.

  • Any underlying medical issues

Individuals suffering from chronic illnesses like Anemia, vitamin deficiency, obesity get fatigued easily and have greater tendency to fall asleep at work.

  • Depression

Individuals suffering from mental health disorders like stress and anxiety often experience insomnia and lack of proper sleep at night. This induces more fatigue and thus results in falling asleep in the day.

How to manage falling asleep at work?

  • Go for a nap

It is always better to take a nap instead of trying to stay awake. When you are too tired of work, go for a nap. Feeling sleepy or trying to fight sleep can reduce concentration at work and result in less work productivity. Taking a nap is recommended since it will make one feel fresher and more rejuvenated.

  • Go for a walk.

Sitting immediately after meals or for prolonged duration is not healthy and is known to make one feel tired and lazy. Getting up from your desk and going around for a walk will help. One can also stretch out their body or got out of office to get some fresh air.

  • Avoid heavy meal

Try to avoid eating a heavy meal, especially during lunchtime.  Instead try to have a small meal at regular intervals of time.

  • Coffee break

Coffee contains caffeine which acts as a stimulant. It increases brain activity and reduces sleepiness.

Having a proper 8 hours of sleep at night and staying physically fit and healthy can help one avoid falling asleep at work. It can improve work productivity and concentration and help one achieve a proper work-life balance.
